Dead in the Water
Over 2,000 hog and poultry Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) litter the Cape Fear River basin. Improperly managed animal waste from these factory farms runs into the Cape Fear River, the source of one in five North Carolinians’ drinking water, creating a danger to environmental and public health.
These farms are hidden in rural counties where neighboring residents have little political voice or economic clout. Residents are subject to the smell, debris, and raw waste polluted from the farms.
Dead in the Water seeks to expose the science and stories behind these unsustainable, industrial farms.
